About North Shore Vacuum
North Shore Vacuum is a family-owned and operated business, which has been dedicated to serving our customers since we opened our doors in 1934. Run by fourth-generation owner, Wayne Simonelli, North Shore Vacuum and Appliance carries all major vacuum brands and now offers a full line of Miele appliances at our Middleton location. Carrying vacuums of all types, sizes and price, North Shore Vacuum and Appliance makes it easy to find the largest and most complete selection of vacuum cleaners in the area.

Lynn shop owner knows his vacuums
The Daily Item – Wednesday, May 9, 2007
“Vacuums are sexy,” says Wayne Simonelli with a straight face before quickly crediting the remark to vacuum industry leader Cliff Brady.

The ear catching comment refers to the decade's long battle by household vacuum manufacturers to capture the consumer's interest and dollar by selling, by turns, vacuums that look like rocket ships, robots, modern art or chrome kitchen mixers with wheels and handles.

Simonelli, owner of North Shore Vacuum on Market Street, relies more on his reputation than the eye-catching appeal of his products to attract and keep customers.

He is the fourth-generation owner of a downtown business founded in 1934 by Harry Held who was succeeded by Roy Chevalier, Mark Quinn and Simonelli, proprietor since 1989.

Simonelli's shop is crowded with vacuums and the rear room repair area is full of others in various states of dismantlement.

“I know vacuums. I go to seminars, conventions. I probably repair 1,000 machines a year.”

He rates the German-made Miele as the best vacuum on the market. The machines cost as much as $1,200 compared to $1,800 for a top-of-the-line Kirby.

He also like Riccars – one of the few vacuums still made in the United States – and says the popular Hoover is mostly an assemblage of Mexican and Chinese made parts.

Simonelli is a skeptic when it comes to bagless vacuums. He said the machines require new parts that can easily exceed the $20 price tag for a dozen vacuum bags. The machines also release dust and dirt when they are dismantled and cleaned.

He sells central vacuum systems and said installing a network of suction tubes inside a home along with outlets for attaching a vacuum hose costs between $1,500 and $1,800.

Chain retail stores like Wal-Mart may undercut Simonelli's prices but he said the vacuums he sells will ultimately cost the customer less in repair bills than cheaper models.

“I take pride when people say, ‘I've been coming here for 20 years. You always have what I want.’ I decided a long time ago that i was going to know this business,” he said. Cliff Brady would be proud.
